Frequently Asked Questions

Opening your home to a stranger is scary. Even more so when things have piled up, we're embarrassed or ashamed, and we can't find our own way out. Knowing what to expect can help set us all up for success.

What does a Professional Organizer do?

A professional organizer helps you declutter, organize, and improve the systems in your home or workspace. We’ll come in and clear out the space we're working in, categorize the contents, work with you to release some items, then organize what remains in a way that works for your life.

How should I prepare?

I'm so overwhelmed I don't know how or where to start

Seeing the natural state of things helps me understand the ecosystem of your home and tidying up before I arrive can be detrimental to our success together.

If we are working in the kitchen or on clothing, try to have all of the items clean so they're ready to be organized. If there are trash, dishes, or laundry in a space they don't belong you could start by removing those items from that area.

If we have a lot of decluttering to do, generally leave things as they are and focus on yourself: eating, caffeinating, tending to your pet so you feel ready when I arrive.

We can start with a tour through your home. I will ask you to show me where things are. I'll help ensure we're not just putting band aids on but truly helping you create systems destined for long term success. Sometimes that means starting three rooms away from where it feels like the problem is.

How much does it cost?

All services are billed hourly starting at $65 per hour. Standard sessions are 3-4 hours. We will take one tote of donations per hour. You can book one session at a time or your entire project at once making our services cost friendly for all budgets. We can share tips for preparing your space before we arrive to cut down on your costs, just ask!

Just for general reference, a space that begins as 'unorganized' and is completed to 'good enough' will take:

  • Whole Home: 30 Hours

  • Garage: 12 Hours

  • Kitchen: 6 Hours

  • Closet: 2 Hours

What is the process like?

Our approach is not one size fits all. However, you can expect:

  • My supplies: We arrive with clear, empty bins. These are to help us sort your belongings efficiently. I have a basket of tools I bring with me, but often times I'll just use my sorting bins, a Sharpie and painter's tape.

  • My approach: I'll ask a lot of questions to understand how things are and aren't working. From there, we'll determine functions, categories and zones. I don't want to change anything that is working - so please advocate for yourself if I'm misunderstanding. That said, you can always move things around after I leave - so don't sweat perfection too much while I'm in your space. You get to make all the final decisions; I'm just acting as a bridge to help you get there.

  • The process: We'll discuss goals and clarify the plan - and then begin sorting and clearing the space. After we go through and release items, we'll organize what remains into zones that align with those items' function.

  • You have options for how we work together:

  1. To begin, it'll take at least an hour or two to categorize the contents of the space. You can take a walk, do a chore, do some work; staying clear until I group 'like with like' and toss the trash so you don't get decision fatigue too early. When everything is sorted, you'll come in and help sort out any items we can release/purge.

  2. We'll get to work categorizing together, working opposite ends of the room. As we progress, I'll pull you into decisions: 'can we thin these books?' 'Do they still play with any of these?' 'What is this?' 'Are we saving this or is this trash?' Once everything is sorted, we'll go through each category and see how many items we can release before organizing what remains.
